Fred Asante

Hello!

I am an Assistant Professor of Accounting at the Smeal College of Business at The Pennsylvania State University. I hold a Ph.D. in Accounting from Cornell University, an MBA from Wake Forest University, and a BBA in Accounting with high distinction from Howard University.

My research lies at the intersection of accounting, banking, contracting, corporate social responsibility, and development economics. I study how financial reporting rules, debt markets, financial regulation, and institutional environments shape the decisions of banks and firms. A central focus of my work is understanding how global financial regulations are implemented in developing economies, particularly where informality, limited documentation, and weak enforcement institutions affect access to credit and economic activity.

Before entering academia, I built a career in corporate finance and commercial banking at Bank of America and gained additional professional experience at Deloitte & Touche, J.P. Morgan, and Lockheed Martin. These experiences continue to inform my research by providing practical insight into the interaction among financial institutions, regulatory frameworks, accounting information, and corporate decision-making.

Research interests: Banking; Debt Contracting; Supply Chain Sustainability; Developing Economies; Alternative Data.
